Every week, the occupational therapists at SCT have different Foods of the Week available to clients who are seen for feeding concerns in order to introduce novel foods of various textures and flavors, to increase oral awareness, and/or to improve oral motor skills. This week’s “Foods of the Week” are Hello Panda cookies and banana milk. Both of these foods are available at H-mart. The banana milk provides a sweet and smooth texture and the Hello Panda cookies are crunchy on the outside and have a creamy strawberry center. #feedingtherapy #foodoftheweek
Today, January 20th is the International Day of Acceptance! “This is an annual observance dedicated to promoting social acceptance, inclusion, and equal opportunities for people with visible or invisible disabilities…This day serves as a call to action to build a more inclusive world by valuing diversity and supporting everyone to live authentic lives.”
This month’s sign of the month is “music.” Move one hand along your other forearm in the shape of an 8 as if you were conducting music. You can model this sign for your child or use hand over hand assistance to guide their hands.
Sign language is a visual language that uses hands, movements, and facial expressions to communicate words. Sign language helps to facilitate and encourage language development by providing children earlier access to language. There are several advantages to early introduction of sign language in children including: improved social skills, increased confidence, and improved self esteem. For a preverbal child or a child with a speech delay, communicating through signs provides a means to express themselves which in turn helps them to avoid frustration and tantrums.

Here are some fun blowing activities that can improve lip and cheek strength, drooling, food pocketing, blowing strength and endurance (i.e. bubbles, candles), self-regulation difficulties (i.e. calm their body), decreased proprioceptive sensory processing, motor planning difficulties, visual fixation skills, and visual tracking skills. These activities are done in order from easiest to most challenging as listed below:
*Blow a cotton ball, craft pom pom, or craft feathers off of your flat hand placed right in front of the child's mouth. The smaller/lighter the item, the easier it will be. You can stand behind the child to assist with the blowing.
*Next, blow the item off the length of a box or book. Then off the width, then length of a table. If your child is unable to lean over the table, you can have them blow through a straw. Cut the straw to shorten, if needed. Using a straw can also be a fun additional challenge as they have to figure out how to move the straw to direct the air.
*If the child is able to blow the item(s) off the length of a table, then you can have them blow the item(s) into a GOAL such as a shoebox or paper bowl/cup cut in half and taped onto the table. For an additional fun challenge, tape down a “ROAD” which the child will have to blow the item (i.e. "car" or "boat") within that path.
*“SOCCER GAME” - This is where you are the opponent and the goal is for you and your child to blow the “BALL” off of each other’s side of the table or GOAL.
